Pitted dates are whole dates with the stone removed. They retain the fruit’s naturally occurring sugars, fibre and other nutrients, but the precise values vary by variety, moisture level and brand. The most reliable source for a particular product is its Australian Nutrition Information Panel.
This guide explains how to read pitted dates nutrition information, what “no added sugar” actually means, how Australian dried-fruit serving guidance works and where dates fit best in everyday cooking.
What is in pitted dates?
A plain pitted date can have a one-ingredient list: dates. Aurum Soft Pitted Dates are made from Tunisian Deglet Noor dates with no added sugar, preservatives, sulphites or oil.
Pitting is a convenience step, not a new ingredient. The stone is removed before packing so the dates are ready for snacking, chopping and blending. As with any mechanically or manually pitted fruit, an occasional stone fragment can remain, so bite and blend with care.
Understanding the nutrition panel
Australian packaged foods show nutrition information per serving and per 100g. The per-serving column explains the amount in the manufacturer’s nominated serve. The per-100g column is more useful when comparing two brands or date varieties because it puts them on the same basis.
When comparing pitted dates, look at:
- the serving size in grams;
- energy;
- total carbohydrate and sugars;
- dietary fibre, when declared;
- sodium; and
- the ingredients and allergen statements.
Values can differ because dates are an agricultural product. Variety, harvest and moisture affect the finished fruit, so use the figures on the actual packet rather than a generic number copied from the internet.
Are pitted dates sugar-free?
No. Dates naturally contain sugar because they are fruit. “No added sugar” means the producer has not added sugar, syrup or another sweetening ingredient during processing. It does not mean the naturally occurring sugars have been removed.
This distinction also applies to date paste and date sugar. Date paste is dates processed into a smooth format, while date sugar is whole dried dates milled into granules. Both retain the fruit’s naturally occurring sugars.
What is an Australian serve of dried fruit?
The Australian Dietary Guidelines identify 30g of dried fruit as one fruit serve, but list dried fruit as an occasional alternative to fresh fruit. Your product’s nutrition panel may use a different serving size; a nutrition-panel serving and a dietary-guideline serve are not necessarily the same thing.
See the official Australian serve-size guidance for context.
Deglet Noor and Medjool nutrition: compare the labels
It is tempting to describe one date variety as automatically lower in sugar or higher in fibre than another. In practice, nutrition varies with moisture, growing conditions and the particular product. Compare two packets using their per-100g nutrition panels before making that conclusion.
The clearest differences between Deglet Noor and Medjool dates are usually physical:
- Deglet Noor: generally smaller, amber-coloured and tender-firm, with a clean honey-caramel flavour.
- Medjool: generally larger, softer and stickier, with a richer caramel flavour.

How to use pitted dates
Eat them from the pouch
Pitted dates are ready to eat. Their compact size also makes it easy to portion what you intend to use rather than eating directly from a large bulk container.
Chop them into baking
Deglet Noor dates hold their shape well in banana bread, muffins, oat bars, cookies and granola. A lightly oiled knife can help when chopping a sticky batch.
Blend them
For energy balls, smoothies or homemade date paste, soak firmer dates in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, drain and blend. Ready-made date paste is the faster option when a recipe needs a smooth texture.
Use them in savoury dishes
Chopped dates bring sweetness and chew to couscous, grain salads, tagines, stuffing and cheese boards without requiring a separate syrup.
Storage and quality
Keep the pouch sealed and follow the storage instructions and best-before date on the pack. Store it away from heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Natural sugar crystals can sometimes appear on the surface of dates; this is different from fuzzy, discoloured or off-smelling mould. If a product looks or smells spoiled, discard it.
The practical answer
Pitted dates are a convenient form of whole fruit, not a sugar-free food and not a medicine. Choose products by reading the ingredients and nutrition panel, compare brands per 100g and use a portion that suits the meal or recipe.
